Car side doors

I wonder if vehicle side panels could be improved if the door were mounted more on the 'outside' of a frame, instead of as a part of the contiguous frame system. by overlapping this on top of a pair of roll-bar like door frames, a side impact could be reduced. this would, however, increase the overall width of the car, although this effect is of little true importance. the opening of the door would be covered by a shield instead of being a door filling a hole.
